Support for children who are non-verbal

Communication is not only speech. Plenty of progress happens well before a first word, and it counts.

Start by learning how your child already communicates

A child who is not speaking is usually still telling you a great deal, through what they reach for, where they look, what they refuse, and how they move.

The first job is learning that vocabulary properly rather than talking over it. That takes time with one person who is paying attention, which is exactly what one-to-one support is for.

The repetition is the work

Communication progress comes from the same thing happening the same way, many times, with someone who responds consistently.

That is hard to get from a rotating roster, because each new person starts from scratch and the child has to teach them all over again.

Alongside therapy, not instead of it

Speech pathologists set the direction. Support workers are often the ones with the hours to practise it in real life, between appointments.

Lynne is an early childhood educator, not a therapist, and does not write communication programs. She follows the plan your therapist sets and does the patient practice in the places the child actually lives.

What progress can look like

Sometimes it is a first word. Often it is earlier and quieter than that: making a choice between two things, using a picture or a sign to ask, waiting for a response instead of giving up, staying regulated long enough to try.

Lynne has worked with a non-verbal autistic boy over a long stretch and saw exactly this pattern. The visible milestone arrives late and gets all the credit. The real work happened months earlier.

Being honest about it

Not every child will speak, and no one can promise that they will. What can be offered is patient, consistent support from someone who assumes your child has something to say and is willing to put in the time to find out how they say it.

Talk it through

If your child is non-verbal and you are working out what support would help, a conversation costs nothing. Lynne will tell you honestly if she is not the right fit.
